How to Create Easy DIY Faux Wallpaper

We have literally been excited to decorate each room in our new home...or at least I have been lol! I'm so thankful Blake is such a handy man to help me with my house projects! 

We finally decided to get started on our master bedroom, and I wanted to make the room theme flow with our living room, so we carried the burnt orange color from our couch pillows into our bedroom. 

I absolutely love accent walls, and I really like the idea of wallpaper on one wall, however wallpaper can get super expensive, so we decided to do our own thing! We created a super cute accent wall for under $50 in about 2 hours! 

Here's how we did it:​

Supplies:
Poster board (or the top of a pizza box, that's what we used!)
Paint (We did a quart, but you could easily get by with a paint sample)
Tape measure 
Painters tape 
Something to help you make your lines straight (we used a piece of wood from Lowes)
Drop Cloth 
Rectangular Sponges
Scissors 
Pencil 

1. Your first step is to make your stencil. Blake cut slots the size of the sponge and then left a space about the size of the sponge in between each cut out slot. The stencil was one foot by one foot to make a perfect square.

2. Next you want to tape your grid to the wall. We marked off every foot on the width and height on the wall (or horizontal  and vertical). We then took the piece of wood to line up our tape to in order to make sure our lines were straight. We also used a level because we are perfectionist! Together we laid the tape along the piece of wood to make our grid. 

3. Next, the fun part! Dip your sponge into the paint and wipe off on the side of the paint container. It's super important to make sure you don't have too much paint on your sponge or the paint will drip. I learned this the hard way. I would recommend practicing on a scrap piece of paper first. We lined up the stencil to the upper left corner of the grid squares. Then we pressed the sponge into each slot of the stencil. 

4. Let your paint dry for a little while before peeling up your tape. This is definitely the easiest part because you shouldn't have any paint touching the actual painters tape.

We had some much fun doing this and we were thrilled with the outcome of our first attempt at faux wallpaper!
